Overview

Situated in the highlight of eastern Zambia, South Luangwa National Park is one of the magnificent wildernerness area that has garnered tourists from all walks of life. The park is well known as ‘the South Park’ and was founded in 1904 as Luangwa Game Park. In 1938, this national park was converted into one of the three game reserves making it a popular tourist attraction in Africa. This remarkable park covers an area of about 9050 square kilometers of Luangwa Valley floor and lies anywhere from 500 to 800 meter above sea level. The park boasts of dramatic and fascinating topography making people come more often to this place. Bordered by Luangwa River, the park supports a large diversity of mega fauna and allows the animals to drink from the waterhole. The largest population of hippo and crocodile resides in the river where as elephant, zebra and many other predators are attracted to the fertile and forested banks. One of the best things that you can spot here are leopards and many spotted cats in their natural habitat. Mountain Bike Safari

How to Reach South Luangwa NP

By Air: The nearest airport to South Luangwa national park is Mfuwe Airport which has recently received an international status. Various airlines run to and fro from the airport and are functional throughout the year. Proflight Zambia is the only airline that flies daily to South Luangwa and Livingstone from Lusaka all year around.

By Car: One can approach South Luangwa from three directions via car. The first route is from Chipata where you can drive for 123 km that will take about two hours to reach Mfuwe, just outside the park. If you are traveling in a 4X4 robust from Lusaka, you might want to take a short cut from the Great East Road at Petauke, next to the Luangwa River to Mfuwe.
